Here's a crash course in Cultural Studies as I know it. This is how we attempt to think:
- what is most ubiquitous is most invisible
- what is most obvious is most difficult to grasp
- what is most about fun/amusement is site of the most serious meaning
Of course, cultural studies is different depending on who's doing the theorizing. But I like this way of thinking the best so far, from what I've seen. Looking at cricket and seeing it as a political, intellectual, and artistic form. Finding meaning in television shows. Seeing something you view everyday as foreign. Hence the George Orwell quote in the margins.
Being a culture vulture and being a cultural studies person isn't the same thing. And I'm not exactly strictly either of them. I just am. And I'm using what I have around me to continue to wonder why and how.
This has been a public service announcement by [Nazi Vampire Hunter]. Thank you.
